| Blood Red Dress - Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
This was always one of my favourite dresses of Arwen's, but I had never intended to make it since so many other folks had already done it so well. When I decided I wanted to do another LOTR costume, Ash talked me into doing this one. |
| Construction Notes:
I originally bought black velvet from Hancocks, intending to just do a quick version of this costume, then decided to buy white velvet and try to dye it. I returned the black and ordered white. Then Maggie of Padawan's Guide suggested SyFabrics, and they had a beautiful deep blue silk velvet that was just right. I found the red velvet locally. I bought a lot of velvet for this costume! I found the brocade fabric on ebay - it's upholstery fabric and very thick, but I liked how it looked.
I made an underdress out of dark blue lining - it zips up the back. To this I attached the full bell sleeves, which I drafted my own pattern for. All of the trim I bought (two different kinds), cut apart, dyed and sewed back together onto the neckline/arm. The gold braid I bought and sewed on. The jumper I made without a pattern, and added the brocade around the neckline. The wig and ears I already had. |
