| Pink Winter/Christmas Dress - Disney's Beauty and the Beast
I always liked her dress and cape she wore in "Something There" - I had originally wanted to make this earlier, around December 2006, so that we could take pictures at the Opryland hotel. Unfortunately I didn't get to it until several months later. |
| Construction Notes:
I had the hardest time finding fabric I liked for this costume. I didn't want it to be fancy fabric, but not simple, either -- and finding various pink fabrics that didn't clash was also difficult! I wound up with a basic pink for the skirt and sleeves, and a light pink matte satin for the ruffles, stripes and shoulder wrap. I originally intended to dye the medium pink a darker pink for the bodice, but that didn't go well, so I ended up buying something that worked fine.
I used one pattern for the top - it ended up huge, even though I cut it a size small! I still need to take it in a little through the waist. I lined it, and added boning. The skirt I made using a basic skirt pattern - it's only two panels, I just cut them very wide, then pleated the waist. Then I attached that to the bodice. For the stripe up the front, and around the waist, I cut that out of the light pink matte satin and sewed it on. I only sewed the waist band section on the top, and as a result, it kept wanting to slide up, so that is something I will have to fix for future wearings. I went by a drawing from a colouring book as a reference for this part - the stripe was much wider on that than it appears in other artwork I've seen, and I preferred that, so that's what I went by. I also need to make sure I have the top on straight -- I had it on crooked for a good part of the day (and for most of my photos!) at MTAC -- thanks to laying down while wearing it for a while, probably! -- so the top of the stripe is scewed in most of my pics! Grr!
The ruffle around the bottom I cut out, hemmed, and gathered and attached. The ruffle at the sleeves I used a pattern for. The shoulder wrap I made and then tacked onto the front -- I need to sew it down onto a few more places on the dress, too, because it wouldn't stay in place very well.
The cape I made out of some velvet I already had - I wasn't originally intending to make the cape to go with it right now, but Chase talked me into it. I used a pattern for the cape part, made the capelet seperately and sewed it on. I handsewed white maribou trim onto the edges. And it got everywhere!
Unfortunately I did not manage to get pictures of myself wearing this at Dragoncon 2007! ;)
