| Flying Leathers - Dragonriders of Pern
My mother had gotten me into the Pern books the year before. When she decided to go to Dragoncon with us the next year and wanted to do a Pern costume, I thought it would be fun to go as Lessa with her.

| Construction Notes: I based the design of the costume on one of the illustrations of flying leathers from one of the books. I found this fabric back around Easter of 2004 at a Hancocks in another city (I was visiting my grandmother). I didn't buy it, because I figured my Hancock Fabrics at home would have it. Of course they didn't. Well I was back at my grandmother's in July of 2004, and lo and behold they still had that fabric! So I bought it. It looks a bit green in pictures, but it was a nice, brown pebbley faux-skin looking vinyl - I really liked how it looks, I just wish it wouldn't catch the flash of the camera and look shiney.
Anyway, I used the Civil War pattern I had just used for my Imperial Officer. The pants are pretty simple - drawstring waist. The jacket velcros shut. I wore a little white shirt underneath this and was glad I did - it was SO hot. I bought the fur and trimmed the jacket, belt, gauntlets, and boot covers in it. The gauntlets and boot covers I made. I bought all the leather ties that tie all those pieces closed. The boots I had and dyed a darker shade. The belt I made - I bought the metal hooks that go around it and tied them on with the leather bits. The goggles I bought and covered in the fabric. The wig and gloves I had. |
